LDM Fellow Aminu gamawa awarded a $250,000 grant to address maternal, newborn deaths in Sub-saharan africa

LDM Nigerian Fellow Aminu Gamawa was awarded a $250,000 grant from the Saving Lives at Birth Partnership. Aminu's project focuses on promoting maternal and child health in northern Nigeria by working with a network of Islamic Scholars to leverage their persuasive powers and change perecptions in the country's northern Muslim states.
Aminu Gamawa joined the LDM program in 2009, motivated by the death of his mother from child birth. He excelled in the program and was at one point made a facilitator by the Development Research and Projects Centre (dRPC) in Nigeria.

Murari Choudhury and the network for enterprise enhancement and development support (Needs) receive mbillionth award of "mobile for good"

The mBillionth Award 2011 will honour excellence in mobile communications across South Asia spread over 11 core categories. The categories are: m-entertainment, m-culture & heritage, m-business & commerce, m-education & learning, m-news & journalism, m-enviornment, m-governance, m-health, m-inclusion, m-infrastructure, m-travel & tourism.
The objective of the award was to bring together mobile technology experts, practitioners, business leaders, and other stakeholders, of South Asia on to one platform and identify innovative application of mobile technology for good of the society.
This year, 2011, mBillionth award shall explore the concept of 3G technologies, its innovations, and applications and how it is and can play a constructive role in improving governance services, resolve connectivity and affordability.
There are more than 600 delegates, more than 200 Mobile developers companies, and more than 100 NGOs practicing Mobile innovatively, and tremendous participation from government, telcos and experts from more than 25 states in India and countries like Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal and other south Asian countries.
From the competitors, 11 awards were given, one to each category. NEEDS received the award in the m-health category for its CommCare project [mobile for mother] for it’s innovative application of technology. Read the brochure for the winning technology: Mobile for Mother

Binod Dubey, an LDM Fellow of India, published two articles featured in the Hindustan Times. His writings on child marriage and early pregnancy in the districts of Nawada and Nalanda provoked heated controversy within the Bihar Assembly and between government officials. India Final Fellows Meeting
December, 2010
The Final India Fellows meeting was designed and led by LDM India’s Country Manager Namrata Jha with significant input from the Leadership Fellows. To structure the meeting, Namrata organized different teams of Fellows who designed, facilitated and managed operations, cultural events, travel and logistics. The guest speakers included Dr. Prasad Kaipur from the Indian Institute of Management, the keynote speaker at last year’s International Leadership Association conference. The coordination and final event were executed beautifully and part of the success is credited to high participation and collaboration.
